Strongly opposing the narrative which involves Macao in the U.S. State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report
25-06-2024
Regarding the U.S. Department of State’s 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report (hereinafter referred to as the report), which rated the Macao Special Administrative Region Tier 3, the security authority expresses strong discontent and firm opposition and makes the following response: In order to prevent and combat human trafficking and related illegal activities, the Macao SAR actively participates in international cooperation, properly protects victims and coordinates relevant government bureaus to cooperate with the investigation and trial work of judicial authorities through the Human Trafficking Deterrent Measures Concern Committee (hereinafter referred to as the committee) and in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 6/2008 "Combat the Crime of Trafficking in Persons" and internationally adopted strategies. Related crimes have been effectively curbed and the crime rates have been extremely low or even zero for many years. The basic rights and personal safety of local residents and foreigners coming from all over the world are effectively guaranteed, fully demonstrating the results of good governance. The efforts and results achieved by the Macao SAR in this regard are evident to the international community over the years. Authoritative data and information show that Macao is one of the safest and most dynamic international tourist cities in the world, and it must not be distorted or even obliterated by the one-sided words of individual countries. For a long time, the United States has not faced up to the serious situation of human trafficking within the country, yet it has been constantly making false accusations against various places and the content related to Macao has been untrue for many years. The intention of the report goes beyond preventing and combatting the crime of human trafficking, and the entire narrative is full of obviously ill motives to interfere in Macao's internal affairs. The security authority expresses strong objections to it. The Macao SAR’s determination to prevent human trafficking and other illegal activities has always been unwavering. The government will continue to coordinate government bureaus and all sectors of society through the committee to implement relevant prevention and combat strategies, aiming to effectively protect the legitimate rights and interests of everyone in Macao. The government will strive to work with the international community to make unremitting efforts to eliminate human trafficking and all forms of exploitation.
